Exercise Science Specializations

All exercise science majors study movement, but by taking some more specialize courses, you can prepare for a specific career within the exercise science field. For example, if you’re a fan of sports, you might want to study sports medicine or physical training. You can also take classes in fields like statistics, which allows you to prepare for a career in research. Exercise isn’t just about helping people train their bodies, however.¬† You can also work¬† in psychology, helping athletes and those trying to reach weight loss goals with the mental aspects of exercise, such as dealing with failure. Another specialization you can consider is education. This can be in a traditional teaching sense, where you’ll work as a science or physical education teacher, or it can be in a more public health way, where you’ll work with government organizations, nonprofits, or private companies to help promote health living.

Just how much you specialize in your education will depend on both the school you attend and your degree level. If you hope to work in a highly specialized job, you’ll need extra classes to develop skills in this area – typically, the highest-paying jobs in exercise science require at least a master’s degree. In some jobs, you may also need state certification to work in even an entry-level position, so check your local laws to find out what kind of degree you need to qualify.
